David Gaynor, a native New Yorker raised in a family of furniture manufacturers, brings a distinctive approach to his craft. He views furniture design as a marriage of material awareness, thoughtful connection, and a commitment to scale and proportion. Based in New York City, David established his studio in 2010, where he continues to shape his vision. We recently had the opportunity to sit down with him and delve into his Pierce Collection, exploring his insights into how concrete influences his design process.
What was your Pierce Collection inspired by?
Our pierce collection looks at the interaction between the top and the base. The idea of the wood legs piercing through the concrete material and holding the top in place. I also paid attention to the round and flat planes. The back side of the leg almost becomes a facet instead of a smooth round.
What materials do you typically design with?
We do a lot of mixed materials in our work. We focus on wood, metal, upholstery, and stone.
How does our concrete collaboration affect your design?
I find that it makes a very nice replacement for a stone material. Not having to search for the perfect stone for someone and not having to buy a whole slab logistically makes it easier. The amount of color variation and change in aggregate of finish gives me a lot of options to provide my clients with.
